ABOUT THE OWNER

MARK HUGHES

I started cutting hair at about 11 or 12, and every Christmas or birthday, all I wanted was clippers. I began cutting my cousins and other family members' hair for free until I got better. My Granny Dorothy sat me down and told me, "Baby, you’re getting good, so you better start charging, or they'll use you up." Taking her advice, I started charging $3.00. As my skills progressed, I raised my prices to $5.00, then $7.00, and finally $10.00. With a fairly big family, I quickly built up a nice clientele.

I continued cutting hair until I was about 22. When I dropped out of high school, barbering became my primary source of income. I earned my GED in 1997 and immediately enrolled in barber school on February 15th, graduating in October 1998. Before she passed, my Granny Bessie told me she would love to see me do something with myself and promised to buy me a car of my choice if I did. After I graduated, I found a 1978 Cutlass Supreme for $500.00—rusty but trusty, and exactly what I wanted.

Reflecting on my journey, I see how crucial my grandmothers and family have been in my achievements in barbering. Their encouragement and belief in me inspired my determination to succeed, shaping my path in this rewarding career.
